A bunch of flowers gathered from my summer garden and placed in a simple jar where the inspiration for this textile collage. I have used velvet, cotton and voile to build the picture and detail has been added with thread. The rich jewel colours and accents of darks and light cream add drama and impact .

The Bones of the Land

Lancashire Walk

The Leeds Liverpool Canal runs through the village where I live and I often walk there. This collage captures a still summer day when the shadows were deep, the reflections perfect and wild flowers grew high on the banks. I was especially attracted by the beautiful pink Hemp Argrimony tall and statuesque. I have used hand dyed fabrics, lace and silk enhanced with stitch to capture my response .

Sloes in the hedge

Walking in north Wales I was struck by the beauty and abundance of the hedgerows. The purple black of the sloe berries so tempting but so sour inspired this picture. Autumnal tones of fabric have been collaged and stitched to create the tangled hedgerow. I  wanted to invited the viewer to really look and consider the magic of our hedgerows, and their importance as places of food and shelter for so many creatures.

Margins

I  began this work by hand dying a range of cotton , responding to the colours in the early autumn landscape. These were collaged and stitched on to a sturdy canvas backing , gradually building detail. The work returns to a recurring theme, the margins between land and water and between open spaces and the tangled mass of vegetation. I invite the viewer to peer through the detail and to  glimpse   the broader landscape beyond.

Jay

This is a celebration of one of the United Kingdoms most beautiful native birds , the Jay. It is a textile collage made from many layers of fabric giving it depth and detail. I have used stitching to add more detail and texture.  The work was inspired by glimpsing a jay in the woodlands near my home .

Gentle Green 2

I spend a lot of time hand dying fabrics to use in my work , trying to capture the subtle tones of nature . The greens of summer are a particular challenge. In this piece I have explored the gentle hues of green which are so evocative of England. They are brought alive by the contrasts and shift from sun to shadow, and form a beautiful contrast with the flowers in my garden.

Late summer roses lift my heart

There is a moment when you can feel summer slipping away and you begin to feel the fading of the light , it is just at this time one of the roses in my garden bursts into bloom. Blooms I know will continue until the first frosts . I wanted to celebrate the beauty of these blooms and the joy they bring me everyday. Dreaming of the Blue

I began this piece on the hottest day of the year and found myself dreaming of the sea , of deep blue cool water and fresh coastal breezes. I have tried to evoke from memory the feeling of being by the sea and to contain within the picture surface the colours and textures of the coast. A Song Thrush in the Garden

Threading

In the North of England were I live and work many beautiful rivers thread their way through the landscape. They bring movement and light, reflecting the sky and the land around.
