About Me

About Me

My paintings and makings are a very personal response to the landscapes I love.

Aiming to capture special moments in beautiful, dynamic, wild places, especially the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands To make and create is my pleasure. To share my work with others is my privilege. I like to challenge the boundaries of what is considered art , using my sketches and observations to develop my paintings, handbags and textile pieces. My work is for those who want to own something original and unique, who value the personal touch and connection to the maker. Desiring to have a little less and love what they own a little more.

In the Studio

Join me in my studio and find out more about how I make my textile paintings

Making a textile painting

I begin by gathering a selection of handdyed and repurposed fabrics and experimenting with how to arrange them. When I am happy with the balance and composition of the layout I glue it to a canvas backing.

Whilst the glue is still wet I begin to add more detail trialing fabric choices and compositions as I go . When I think things are working I glue them in place .

Once the main elements of the composition are in place I begin to add some painted detail. I use acrylic paint , watercolours and ink depending on the effect I want. Some of this process takes place whilst the textile is still damp and I also add painted detail to the dry background

Once the background is dry I sometimes add spray inks to enhance the compostion. As I work I am continually assessing how the overall composition is working and modifying areas.

When the textile painting is dry I add detail with my sewing machine, drawing with thread as you would with a pencil.. I use a mixture of harmonising and contrasting threads to build more layers of interest

I continue this process of adding appliqued, stitched and painted details , highlighting and subduing areas as I go.

Creating a textile painting

I also like to add some hand stitched details towards the end of the process

I have a good long look in a variety of lights and make a few last adjustments  and the process is complete.

Artroom Gallery

You can now find a selection of my work at the Artroom Gallery which is in the lovely Lancashire town of Garstang . The gallery owner is passionate about supporting northern artists and makers and the shop has a lovely mixture of art, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery . Garstang is a very pretty town with a thriving high street of independent shops and lovely walks along the canal and the River Wyre.

I recently had the lovely experience of exhibiting with Bolton Stitch and Textile Group at the coach house gallery at Astley Hall , there was a fantastic selection of work in both 2d and 3d.  Its a really friendly group with a good range of workshops and activities.

I will be running a workshop for them in February 2025.
